FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Newly-appointed California corrections chief Scott Kernan is planning to add training on diversity and leadership for prison employees.

The goal is to change a culture which often pits guards against inmates and outsiders.

After years of controversies over racism and overcrowding, policymakers say it’s time to emphasize rehabilitation.

Kernan hopes to engage the prison guards in the rehabilitation process, making them more than mere head counters.
