FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A proposal that would require large retailers to pay employees double when they work on Thanksgiving, has cleared the California Assembly.
The measure’s author, Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, says Thanksgiving should be a holiday; but, with more retailers opening up and preparing for Black Friday, many employees are required to show up or risk losing their job.
It would apply to grocers and retailers with more than 500 employees.
Opponents argue that the bill would harm employers.
It now heads to Senate.
