FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — 47 percent of registered California voters say the state should do away with the death penalty, and replace it with life in prison.

According to a new Field Poll, 48 percent think the state should speed up the execution process.

Compare that to September of 2014, when Californians favored speeding up the process by a margin of 52 percent-to-40 percent.

Opinions on the death penalty are highly partisan, with Republicans largely supportive, and Democrats primarily opposed.
