Mother Sentenced After Children Alone During Apartment Fire

Jamela Vanessa Brown

January 12, 2016 FRESNO (KMJ) – It was in January of 2015, that 19 year-old Jamela Vanessa Brown walked to a store a half a mile away from her Church Avenue apartment in Southeast Fresno.

She was gone for 30 minutes and in that time, the TV in her apartment caught on fire.

There were three children inside, ages 1, 3 and four – all were unconscious, as smoke engulfed the apartment.

The Fresno Fire Department responded to the scene and rescued the three children.

On Monday, January 11, 2016, a Fresno judge sentenced the young single mother to spend a year in a child abuse treatment program, serve 70 days in jail, and be on probation for four years.

Her children are still in child protection.

Brown gets out of jail in February.
