FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Golden State has 12% of the country’s population, but only about 11% of the body of state and government employees.

According to the Census Bureau, those workers received more than 14% the payroll during march of 2014, the month that the bureau chose to examine.

The figures give credence to claims that California has too few public employees, but above-average expenses.

Almost half those employees work in K-12 schools or public colleges.
