Domestic Violence Increases Over the Holidays

Keeping the peace over the holidays doesn’t always work, and Fresno Police see more incidents of violence in the home.

Victims may be silently struggling with pain and tough decisions to keep the peace.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the holidays and alcohol can cause violence to break out in the home.

“We do see a rise in domestic violence, those cases that occur behind closed doors in the homes.” – Chief Jerry Dyer, Fresno Police.

Sometimes victims will stay through the holidays just to give their kids a holiday home, and once the holidays are over, it breaks down, and violence erupts again.

“And what we always tell people that are in those relationships to get out of them or to seek assistance to get out of that environment – because seldom does it get better, it gets worse.” – Chief Dyer.

One in four women will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
