FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Golden State has the second-highest rate of HIV infections, despite a significant drop in new diagnoses.

The California Department of Public Health says more than 4,700 Californians were diagnosed with the virus in 2013.

That’s significantly lower than the approximate annual rate of 13,000 seen during the 80s and 90s.

The department says while it represents significant progress, there’s still substantial work to be done.

It’s estimated that at least 15,000 Californians are HIV positive, but have yet to be diagnosed.
