Bloomberg reports Swiss pesticide maker was a recent target of the China National Chemical Corporation, otherwise known as ChemChina.
People with knowledge of the deal said Syngenta has rejected ChemChina’s $42 billion offer because of regulatory risk.
The proposed takeover would be the largest by a Chinese company of a European target.
Syngenta is said to be talking to other potential suitors.
Earlier this year, Syngenta rejected a $47 billion offer from Monsanto, the world’s largest seed company.
