FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Californians are closer to having a chance to increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour.
The Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West says it’s collected 500,000 signatures, to get their initiative on the 2016 ballot.
If approved by voters, companies would be ordered to pay no less than $15 an hour, by 2021.
The increase is expected to benefit more than 3 million Californians.
Public support for a higher minimum wage is strong in the Golden State, with 7 out of 10 voters saying they support incremental increases.
Another proposed ballot initiative, in addition to boosting the minimum wage, would require 6 paid sick days a year.
