FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — It’s a multibillion-dollar battle over sweeteners.
A Los Angeles jury will look at the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup Tuesday.
Sugar processors are seeking up to $2 billion, in a false-advertising suit against corn refiners and agribusiness giants.
They say they lost money when refiners tried to rebrand high fructose corn syrup as “corn sugar,” and claimed it was essentially cane sugar.
Corn refiners are countersuing for $530 million, accusing the sugar industry of making misleading statements.
The fight has been rather bitter, and doesn’t appear to be getting sweeter any time soon.
