FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — With El Niño expected to cause flooding in the drought-stricken Golden State, the Federal Emergency Management Administration, and the California Department of Insurance, are urging homeowners to obtain flood coverage.

Such coverage is not offered in traditional plans, and Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones says it may be all that stands between you and devastating financial losses.

Flood insurance is only available through the federal flood insurance program, and must be in effect for 30 days prior to a flood.
