Highway 58 Reopens to Traffic

Highway 58

(KMJ) – Highway 58 reopened Wednesday night, less than a week after mudslides buried cars and stopped traffic.
Traffic started flowing shortly after 6 p.m. with California Highway Patrol escorts, and Caltrans said the highway was fully reopened by 8 p.m.

A downpour last Thursday resulted in severe mudslides and flooding on area freeways, including Highway 58 and Interstate 5 over the Grapevine.  The I-5 reopened the next day.

Dozens of vehicles were left stuck in the mud along a small stretch of the 58 between Tehachapi and Mojave (as pictured above). People left their vehicles behind, some spending that first night in a Red Cross shelter.

The CHP said more than a mile of Hwy. 58 was covered in 5-6 feet of mud, and workers cleared about 75,000 cubic yards of soil from the roadway.
