FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The White House is threatening to veto Senate legislation, which would cut off law enforcement grants to “sanctuary cities,” who shield residents from federal immigration authorities.
Senator Ted Cruz says, “These policies are inexcusable; they are are threat to the public safety of the American people, and they need to end.”
Cruz, and other Republicans, have pushed the bill since the July 1 shooting of Kathryn Steinle in San Francisco.
The man charged in the killing was in the country illegally, despite a long criminal record and multiple prior deportations.
However, Democrats, such as Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, feel differently. Reid says, “This vile legislation might as well be called the “Donald Trump Act.” This legislation paints all immigrants as criminals and rapists.”
The White House believes bill could lead to mistrust between the federal government and local governments.
