FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Four California prisons have been equipped with dispensers offering inmates free condoms, in an effort to reduce the spread of STDs.

In just 6 weeks, more than 21,000 condoms were taken, which is twice the number of inmates housed in the facilities.

The California Correctional Peace Officers Association says the figure is alarming.

Sex between inmates is illegal, and condoms are technically considered contraband, which according to association, means that officers are being ordered to violate their sworn oath.

It adds that prison rapists will simply be encouraged to flush evidence that could be used against them, thereby putting victims in even greater jeopardy.
