Concerns for Valley Nut Growers

Some California pistachio orchards may come up way short this year.

The results of a lack of chilling hours for the pistachio trees last winter are now starting to surface during harvesting.

The crop could be down by as much as 70% for some growers.

Richard Matoian of the American Pistachio growers told KMJ earlier this year that normal looking pistachios could actually be empty or blank on the inside.

A grower told Western Farm press he’s worried that if the current warmer than normal winter weather turns into the new norm which might threaten the future of the crop in California.

California produces nearly all pistachios grown in the United States.
