FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — An unprecedented 5 million Californians left for other states, between 2004 and 2013, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The net population loss was just over 1 million, but that still resulted in a loss of about $26 billion in annual income.

Texas drew nearly 600,000 former Golden State residents, followed by Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon.

Some analysts blame the state’s tax high cost of living and the tax structure.
