Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is on Capitol Hill today, discussing GMO labeling – and calling on the Senate to defeat what’s called the ‘Dark Act.’

Paltrow was joined by her mother Blythe Danner, and Gary Hirshberg, the chairman of Just Label It.

They say the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, or the “Dark Act” would ‘take away the right of states to label GMO’s, and stop the FDA from crafting a national GMO labeling standard,

“I’m not here as an expert, I’m here as a mother, an American mother, I have a right to know what’s in the food that I feed my family.” -Gwyneth Paltrow, Actress

Hirshberg says 64 nations around the world label their foods, and the U.S. should, too.

“We’re asking not for a skull and cross bones on the front of packages, we’re asking for two words on the ingredient panel.” – Gary Hirshberg, Chairman, Just Label It.

Proponents say a patchwork of state-by-state regulations could add costs to consumers.

GMO’s have been blasted by nutritionists — but biotech companies claim they’re safe for consumption.

The bill passed the house in July.

Paltrow’s group had a petition with 200,000 signatures in six days, they aim to have half a million by the time the congressional recess is over at the end of August.

The Senate will tackle the GMO labeling bill in the fall.
