About a dozen protesters rallied on the steps of the Fresno Country Sheriff’s headquarters.

They’re calling for an end to the Sheriff’s Department’s involvement with the customs and immigration’s – ICE program.

Luis Ojeda is the Statewide Coordinator from the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance who says ICE has too much power.

“We saw with the previous program that was in place called Secured Communities that the majority of folks who were detained and deported by ICE had no criminal record or had a very minor infraction.” – Luis Ojeda, Statewide Coordinator, California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance.

The Sheriff’s Department has launched a program to provide ICE officers access to inmate records and interview rooms at the jail.

Sheriff Margaret Mims had this to say: “I am against anybody that comes to this country and commits a crime – that’s not anything we should be putting up with.”

Protestors say they will not stop until they are heard.
