FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — That exemption for ultra-low emissions vehicles is fading away.

The California Air Resources Control Board says up until now, hybrids have been exempt from smog checks, because the state was waiting to see the track record on their maintenance. The Bureau of Automotive Repairs also needed time to develop servicing plans.

While hybrids are often seen as more environmentally-friendly, the electric system can contribute to emissions, and the gas engines are similar to more conventional motors.

The board says older hybrids will be the first the state wants to examine.
