Bill Would Stop Smart TV Data Collection

(KMJ)  The California State Assembly has unanimously approved a bill that will make it illegal for new “Smart TVs” to gather data from consumers.

The legislation was written by Asmb. Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles).  He says it’s meant to guard against unwanted surveillance from TV voice recognition systems.

Gatto said, “We don’t want to kill any new technologies. We want people to be able to search their television with their voice, but we just don’t want their conversations recorded, and we don’t want them stored by a third party and broadcast to a third party.”

The measure passed in the Assembly with a vote of 72-0.
