FRESNO (KMJ) — Three valley residents are getting free surgeries, and it’ll mark the end of what would have been some excruciatingly painful months.
Healthcare across the country can be an expensive business, but not being able to afford treatment doesn’t mean you’re immune to getting injured. However, the three locals will be getting their hernia surgery done for free – courtesy of Kaiser Permanente.
“As physicians we’re here to help people”, says Dr. Van Boghossian. “This was an opportunity to do that”
Dr. Boghossian is one of the surgeons who’ll be volunteering his time to help the three in need.
“When we heard about this opportunity there were at least four surgeons in my department who volunteered to do the surgery”.
Under Obamacare, insurance is a legal requirement. But Kaiser says the reason the patients qualified for the free surgery is because they either can’t get insurance because they’re undocumented or because the price of the surgery with insurance is too high.
“And it’s basically to provide a service to the community. We’re here to help the insured and uninsured”.
This year is the third year kaiser’s doing the free surgeries – with another round set to take place in October.
