UC Tuition Hikes Halted, For Now

Gov. Jerry Brown and University of California President Janet Napolitano have agreed to a budget deal that prevents tuition increases for most undergraduate students for at least two more years.

UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein says the updated budget Brown is releasing Thursday increases the 10-campus system’s base budget by the same $120 million proposed in January.

But it adds $436 million over three years for the UC’s indebted pension fund.

Klein says Brown backed down from his requirement making increased funding this year contingent on UC not admitting more out-of-state students and forgoing any tuition increases.

She says the budget would allow the university to raise tuition for out-of-state and international students next year and for professional degree programs other than law schools.
