FRESNO (KMJ) — A city wide competition between commuters has seen cyclists taking back the streets for themselves and their health.

It’s called the ‘Bike to Work Corporate Challenge’ – and the competition gets commuters from across Fresno, and the surrounding county, starting their day on two wheels with a good dose of fresh air.

Firms from across the city are taking part in the head to head competition with prizes and bragging rights up for grabs. Points are scored for the team with the most miles covered.

“It’s a great way to get out and a good source of aerobic exercise”, says Dr. Don Yoshimura. The physician is one of 35 workers taking part in the Kaiser Permanente team. “It’s also a good stress reliever and you get the chance to get out and reflect on your day while you’re on your bike”.

As well as the exercise, he says cycling to work is a good social activity too.

“You get out on the morning get your heart rate going and get your juices flowing. It really makes you more alert and awake throughout the course of the day”.

The Kaiser Permante team is one of more than 50 taking part in the Fresno wide challenge – with groups such as the US Bureau of Reclamation, Fresno State, and Clovis High School, all doing their bit too.
