Fossil Hunter Killed Near Bakersfield

After more than one fossil hunting death at nearby Hang Glider Hill, the director of a Bakersfield fossil museum is warning people that the land is unstable — not to mention private property.

KBAK-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1bOSbYH ) that Donald Reading was killed at the hill on Saturday while digging for shark teeth. A portion of the hillside collapsed and Reading was buried from the neck down by the time officials arrived.

Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science Executive Director Koral Hancharick says bones of marine animals and shark teeth like the ones displayed at her museum litter the hill, which used to be an ocean.

But Hancharick says Hang Glider Hill is private property and composed of unstable sand, silt and clay.

She says there are safer ways to search for fossils.
