Regulators Vow to Protect Drinking Water Against Oil Contamination

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — California regulators are proposing major changes in how underground drinking-water supplies are protected.

Oil companies have drilled more than 170 waste-disposal wells into aquifers suitable for drinking, with permission from the state.

They claim there's been no contamination; but, the EPA says their actions violated federal water laws.

Chief California oil and gas regulator Steve Bohlen says the proposed regulatory changes are "long overdue."
