Flu Season Claims The Lives Of Two People In Fresno County

FRESNO (KMJ) — The flu season has claimed the lives of two Fresno County residents.

The announcement comes from the county's Department of Public Health. They say the pair died from complications resulting from the infection – and both had underlying medical conditions.

“It is with regret that I inform our community of these deaths from influenza infection,” says Dr. Ken Bird, Fresno County Health Officer.

“Although the majority of individuals who contract flu experience mild to moderate illness and recover, the untimely deaths of these two individuals remind us how serious this illness can be and that we must take steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones.”

They advise that locals should get in contact with their health insurance company to see if they provide flu vaccinations – or visit Fresno County's Department of Public Health at 1221 Fulton Mall in Downtown Fresno to get one for six dollars.

They add that – to reduce the risk of influenza infection and help prevent spread of the flu virus – residents should:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Wash hands thoroughly and often
  • Stay home when sick
