SACRAMENTO (Courtesy of KMJ's News Partner – CBS 13 Sacramento) Bird flu is on the rise – and cases have come to light in both Oregon and Washington.
But we can help stop the spread before backyard chickens end up causing a worldwide problem.
Experts have warned the bird flu is spreading – and it can kill off an entire chicken coop if owners don't take proper precautions.
"Once it got a foothold in backyard poultry – it can spread from backyard to backyard", says UC Davis veterinarian Maurice Pitesky. "They can it on their bodies – they can have it on their feet. Just like humans they can carry the virus but not be affected by the virus".
Currently no commercial chicken farms within the golden state are infected – but the scare has already caused some countries to ban imports of U.S. chickens.
Advice for owners is to keep their chickens isolated and away from other wild birds or rodents.
