A Rise In New Year Gas Prices Could Be Starting

FRESNO (KMJ) — With a new fee placed on some oil and gas producers – drivers across the state have been rushing to the pumps to make sure they fill up before any price rises come into force.

But they might not be shooting up as quickly as we thought.

The average price of gas in the state dropped to around $2.63 per gallon. In the valley – it had fallen as low as $2.30 per gallon.

But prices could be going back up again – thanks to a new "cap and trade" decision by legislators in Sacramento – which came into force January 1st.

Right now in Fresno the lowest is at the Fast 'n' Easy on Effie and Belmont at $2.29 – in Visalia it's $2.32 at Lee's Mini Mart on Court and Race – in Madera it's $2.27 at Tackle Box on La Brea avenue – and in Merced it's $2.37 at Costco on R and 15th.

Some have noticed gas stations putting up their prices. Fresno County Sheriff Public Information Officer Tony Botti posted on Twitter this morning that he's seen the price per gallon go up by 10c overnight.

But it seems the expected rise is yet to materialize on a large scale. Looking at overall price history in the valley – it's been about level since the last week of December.

When gas station stocks bought at the lower levels run out and stations start having buying gas at the higher price – that's when the cost could start to go up again.
