DMV Scrambling To Make New Rules For Driver-less Cars

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The technology behind driverless cars is now moving so fast that laws can hardly keep up – meaning Sacramento is scrambling to determine how they'll make sure they're safe.

The DMV is set to miss a important year-end deadline needed to adopt new rules for the cars of the future.

Regulators want to make sure they're safe on the roads – but don't have any means of testing whether or not they're good to go.

The department has asked external companies if they'd be interested in doing the testing on their behalf – with two European firms and two in Ohio responding to the call.

But with no one ready to move right now – officials are planning a safety standards workshop for January.

Whatever the DMV decides to do – it's thought the sheer size of the Golden State will mean the decision will impact national policy for driverless cars for years to come.
