Merced Parent Pays Off Entire School’s Lunch Debt

MERCED, Calif., (KMJ) – Tis the season of giving and families at one Merced City School District campus are feeling the impact.

A parent whose child attends John C. Fremont Elementary school has given an extremely generous gift to the campus.

This week, Rey Lupian offered to pay off the outstanding school lunch debt for the entire school, to the tune of $1,572.25.

Lupian says he did not do it for the attention. He just wanted to help others this holiday season.

”It’s shocking,” said Fremont Principal Dawn Hubble. “Tremendously kind. Human kindness exists and it matters and it’s contagious.”

Hubble says she’s never seen anything like it in her career as an educator.

Merced City School District does not have a charge limit for meals, to make sure no child goes hungry.

Breakfast and after school snacks are free to all.

Some students are eligible for free meals because of household income or family size.

Others may qualify through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including those who are homeless, migrant, runaway, or foster youth.

For those who qualify, lunch is provided at no cost. Families can apply online at www.schoollunchapp.com.

The students, staff and families of Fremont Elementary said they want to thank Lupian for his incredible act of kindness.
