Fresno Unified Students Take Cyber Safety Lessons

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Teachers and students in Fresno Unified are participating in cyber safety lessons this week.

Fresno Unified has seen it’s share of social media mistakes by students – a recent black eye for the district over a blackface.

In June, a video of a Bullard High School student in blackface went viral.

Fresno Unified’s Superintendent called for systemic change and spelled out the steps the district will take including cultural and sensitivity training and social media education.

So this week, to avoid pitfalls in student cyber life, Superintendent Bob Nelson is “talking to them about responsible social media use.”

From Kindergarten through 12th grade, students will learn how to be responsible digital citizens.

89 percent of teenagers have their own smart phone, according to a 2018 poll by Common Sense Media.

Superintendent Nelson says Fresno Unified wants students to improve their common sense when they are online.
