Calif. Bill Calls for Banning Body Cam Facial Recognition Technology

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Assembly Bill 1215 is calling for prohibiting law enforcement agencies in the Golden State from using facial recognition technology in their body cameras, after 26 lawmakers were incorrectly identified as criminals, when their photos were compared to a database of mugshots.

Among them is Democratic Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, chair of the Committee on Public Safety, who claims that facial recognition could negatively affect minority communities.

Other critics, which include the ACLU, say facial recognition technology simply isn’t ready to be implemented on a broad scale.

After clearing the committee, AB 1215 is headed to the Senate floor.
