Smash & Grab Burglar Convicted of Striking at Visalia Jewelry Store

VISALIA, CA (KMJ) – A 42-year-old man who was caught on camera breaking into a Visalia jewelry store in March has been convicted of the crime, Monday.

A surveillance recording showed Jason Hounihan smashing a glass door at the Kay Jewelers at the mall on south Mooney and West Walnut.

He smashed a glass display, grabbed $10,000 dollars worth of jewelry and ran.

The Tulare County District Attorney said Hounihan was convicted of one count of burglary and two counts of vandalism causing over $400 in damage. Each count is a felony.

Hounihan has a prior strike for assault with a firearm in 1997 and convictions for felony weapons possession in 1999, two felony drug convictions in 2008, burglary in 2014, resisting an officer in 2014, and bringing drugs into the jail in 2018.

In February of 2019, Hounihan was convicted of misdemeanor possession of burglary tools and theft.

Hounihan faces up to 6 years and 8 months in prison, when he is sentenced on July 17, 2019.
