6.5 Million Pounds Of Ground Beef Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 57 in 16 states.

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – 6.5 million pounds of ground beef have been recalled after salmonella outbreak sickens 57 in 16 states.

Patients reported getting sick after consuming meat between Aug. 5 to Sept. 6, 2018, according to USDA.

Some of the affected meat is from Arizona-based meat processor JBS Tolleson, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport.

The raw, non-intact beef, which includes ground beef, was packaged on various dates from July 26 to Sept. 7, and shipped to retailers and institutions nationwide and bears the marking “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service.

It is sold nationally under the labels: Showcase (sold at Walmart), Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Comnor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, JBS Generic.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

The beef subject to the recall was shipped to retailers and institutions nationwide and bears the marking “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Eating food with Salmonella contamination can cause salmonellosis, a common bacterial foodborne illness, the news release stated. Symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the food. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness, according to the USDA. Those concerned about an illness should contact a health provider.
