Delano Police Investigate Deadly Shooting In Front Of School

FRESNO, CA – (KMJ) – Police investigated a deadly shooting Friday morning, taping off a block in front of Fremont Elementary School and marking numerous shell casings on the ground.

Police got a 911 call about the gunfire about 5:15 a.m. at 14th Avenue and Clinton Street. The victim, 27-year-old Jaime Melgoza Herrera, was taken to the hospital before officers arrived on scene, police said.

Houses in the area were struck by stray bullets, but police said no other injuries were reported

Police said they don’t know who shot the man or what prompted the shooting.

Thursday was the last day of school at Fremont.

NOTE: The Kern County coroner officially released this man’s name on Friday, with a different spelling for his first name than what was previously provided by Delano police. The coroner spelled his name as Jaime. Police previously spelled his name as Jamie.
