CA Attorneys Could Face Discipline for Consensual Sexual Relationships

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Attorneys who have a consensual sexual relationship with a client could face discipline, under new rules approved by the California Supreme Court.

Beginning in November, such interaction will be prohibited, unless it precedes a professional relationship, or the client is the lawyer’s spouse or domestic partner.

Supporters claim the relationship between a lawyer and client is inherently unequal, so any sexual relationship can be potentially be coercive.

However, some attorneys believe the blanket ban is an unjustified invasion of privacy.
