SACRAMENTO, CA – Gov. Newsom has signed a controversial bill that will affect the future of Fresno roads.
The urgency legislation passed Thursday, AB1923, was authored by Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria (D-Fresno) and State Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced). It would give Fresno County residents the opportunity to vote this November on the Fresno County Transportation Improvement Act, a successor to Measure C – a 30-year tax measure.
But not everyone is on board. Supervisors Bredfeld and Mendes were joined by Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce and Reedley Mayor Matthew Tuttle at a press conference just hours before the vote in Sacramento. They’re considering legal action.
Bredefeld called the-gut-and-amend maneuver a “disgraceful scheme”. He went on to describe Soria and Cabellero “feckless”.
Pearce called it “a dangerous new era of government overreach”.
Soria went on to say: “This is the right thing to do, contrary to what the Fresno County Board of Supervisors chose to do.”
Earlier in the day, Assemblyman David Tangipa (R-Clovis) told KMJ the measure was “unprecedented and discriminatory.”
