FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — The suspect in a Reedley hit-and-run that killed an elderly couple has been arrested after police say he turned himself in at the Mexico border.
The Reedley Police Department says 48-year-old Omar Lopez Chavez called them, said he was in Mexico and would agree to turn himself in at the border crossing.
Chavez has been booked into the San Diego Jail on multiple charges, and the case will be filed with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office.
75-year-old Luis Martinez Araujo and 78-year-old Maria Juarez Mendez were crossing Manning at Haney avenue on Tuesday when they were hit.
The couple was taken to the hospital, where they died from their injuries.
Chavez initially left the scene and could not be found.
Police identified him as the suspect through video and electronic surveillance footage to trace the movements of a white Chevrolet Astro van connected to the crash.
Action News talked to residents who said that speeding and crashes are a recurring concern along the busy roadway.
While an arrest has been made, anyone with more information is asked to contact Reedley police.
