FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced on Monday that he will run for a third term if a proposed ballot measure on term limits passes in November.
The ballot measure would create a term limit of 12 years for both the mayor and city council members in Fresno. Right now, those positions have a limit of two consecutive four-year terms.
“We have built an incredible amount of momentum in this city, and I want to continue with that momentum,” he said.
Fresno City Council President Nelson Esparza is leading the efforts on a series of proposals, also including city funding and development spending.
Dyer has been in office since 2021 and would be termed out in 2029 if the proposed measure does not make it to the November ballot, or if it fails.
Fresno County and the City of Clovis do not have term limits.
Some of Dyer’s biggest priorities as mayor so far include “Beautifying” Fresno, affordable housing and renovating the downtown and Chinatown areas.
Dyer also noted the decrease in crime during his administration and bringing hockey back to the city with the Fresno Falcons.
“I believe having frequent turnover in any organization, including local government, is not healthy,” he said.
The Fresno City Council would have to approve the item on Thursday for it to appear on the November ballot.
