(KMJ) California’s democrat Attorney General Rob Bonta is being blasted over new ballot language for Proposition 39, a voter identification and citizenship verification initiative headed to the November ballot.
The measure, Prop. 39, collected more than a million signatures using a description approved more than a year ago. That original title said the initiative would “establish additional voter identification and citizenship verification requirements.”
Bonta’s office has now issued updated ballot language stating the measure would “prohibit citizens from voting unless they present government-issued identification.”
In an exclusive interview Wednesday on KMJ’s Broeske & Musson Show, Assemblyman David Tangipa (R-Clovis) accused the Attorney General of injecting bias into the ballot title in order to retain a democratic super-majority in Sacramento.
California law requires ballot titles and summaries to be true and impartial, and not create prejudice for or against a measure.
If passed, the initiative would make California the 37th state with voter ID requirements to vote.
The Attorney General’s office has not publicly addressed the criticism.
