FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Students were sent home early from Monroe Elementary School after an ammonia leak was reported at a winery across the street.
Fresno County fire crews responded to the Vie Del Fruit Processor and Winery company on Chestnut and Nebraska avenues just before 9:30 this morning.
The valve, which caused the leak, was shut off but firefighters still had to wait for the released ammonia to dissipate.
Students at Monroe Elementary were put on shelter in place and were then released around lunch time to parents and guardians.
Fifty employees at the winery were also evacuated and waited down the street until it was safe to return.
Fresno Fire Hazmat crews have confirmed the leak has stopped and the plant can operate as normal.
School will resume on Tuesday.
