MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — An investigation is underway in Merced after a 28-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday night, and his killer is on the loose.
Police say the attack happened just after 9:30 pm at Grand Resort Apartments on Devonwood Drive at Meadows Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found the 28-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
“They attempted to provide lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced deceased on scene,” Merced Police Lt. Jose Barajas explained.
Action News was there as investigators continued to canvas the area hours after shots rang out.
Detectives say this appears to be an isolated incident.
“We don’t believe anyone else should feel at risk or in danger. At this moment, there’s no reason for us to believe anybody else is a target,” Lt. Barajas stated.
This is the city’s sixth homicide of the year.
“It’s definitely an uptick and above average of what we’re used to,” Lt. Barajas said.
The department ramped up its gang violence suppression unit back in January after a string of brutal crimes in the city, which led to 41 arrests that month.
“We are constantly working overtime shifts. Still, we have extra patrols that are assigned to the gang violence suppression unit, and they are very successful,” Lt. Barajas stated.
Detectives say it’s too early in the investigation to know if Tuesday’s shooting is gang-related.
No suspect information has been released.
