The shooting happened Tuesday near Interstate 5 in Patterson following a traffic stop.
Dashcam video obtained by KCRA shows the vehicle abruptly backing up, then speeding forward. Moments later, agents open fire.
ICE says the driver “weaponized his vehicle” during the encounter.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons claims the man is a member of the 18th Street Gang and says he’s wanted in El Salvador for questioning in a murder investigation.
The man was rushed to a nearby hospital. He remains in critical condition, while his family strongly denies any criminal ties.
The man’s fiancée and his 2‑year‑old child are expected to attend today’s press conference.
