
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A driver is now in custody in connection with the crash in central Fresno that killed a mother and son early Monday morning.
Police say 22-year-old Timothy Seth Chavez turned himself in at the Fresno County Jail at 9 pm Monday before being turned over to police and interviewed.
The crash happened at about 2 am Monday.
Police say Chavez was driving a Honda Pilot when he ran a red light and hit an SUV, sending it into the Dry Creek Canal off McKinley Avenue near Highway 41.
41-year-old Martha Hernandez died at the hospital after being rescued from the vehicle.
Hours later, crews learned her nine-year-old son, Adrian Hernandez, was also in the vehicle.
His body was eventually found in the canal about two miles downstream.

Chavez was medically cleared at Community Regional Medical Center before being booked for two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony hit and run, driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance.
