(KMJ) Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of a Catholic bishop from the San Diego area amid allegations of major financial misconduct.
Church officials say Bishop Emmanuel Shaleta’s resignation was formally accepted in February and published today.
Shaleta appeared in court Monday, pleading not guilty to charges that he embezzled more than $420,000 in church funds. He was arrested earlier this month at San Diego International Airport while allegedly attempting to leave the country.
A Vatican inquiry also reportedly uncovered that Shaleta made repeated visits to a brothel in Tijuana.
