FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno police have now identified the suspect shot by officers before a standoff in Central Fresno Sunday night. The department says he is 41-year-old Bradley Nicholson.
Police say just before 7 p.m. Sunday, an officer approached Nicholson, who was acting suspiciously in an alley near West and Clinton avenues.
After a brief struggle between the two, the suspect shot at police. The officer who approached Nicholson and another officer began firing back before the suspect barricaded himself in a nearby carport.
Officials say the officers involved were not injured, but at least one of the bullets came close.
“That round actually struck the ball cap that the officer was wearing,” says Deputy Chief Rob Beckwhith. “By the grace of God, we did not have an officer injured tonight, but it did strike his ballcap.”
On Monday, Fresno police released photos of the officer’s ball cap that was struck by gunfire. They also released a photo of Nicholson.
He eventually surrendered at the scene on Sunday after SWAT officers and negotiators arrived.
Nicholson is in critical but stable condition at Community Regional Medical Center, where he remains in custody.
Both officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave.
Fresno police report this is the department’s 6th officer-involved shooting in 2025.
