FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A man is in the hospital after an exchange of gunfire with Fresno police officers.
Police say just before 7 pm Sunday, an officer approached a man who was acting suspiciously in an alley near West and Clinton avenues.
After a brief struggle between the two, the suspect then shot at the police.
Police say the officer who approached the suspect and another officer began firing back as the suspect began to flee.
Officials say the officers involved were not injured. At least one of them came close.
“That round actually struck the ball cap that the officer was wearing,” says Deputy Chief Rob Beckwhit. “By the grace of God, we did not have an officer injured tonight, but it did strike his ballcap.”
At least one of those rounds fired by officers hit the suspect, who then barricaded himself in a nearby carport.
Action News was on scene as SWAT, negotiators and other authorities arrived on scene.
The suspect, however, did eventually surrender without further incident.
Police have not identified the suspect, only sharing that he is a man in his early 40s.
The exact condition of the suspect has not been released, but police say they are recovering at Community Regional Medical Center.
Both officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave.
