FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A Fresno homeless shelter is temporarily closing.
The shelter is in the former Motel 6 off Blackstone and Griffith Way.
The Recuperating Care Program provides shelter to people who are unhoused and were recently released from the hospital.
Housing was operated by Soul-House, a company based in Los Angeles, that is contracted with CAL-VIVA.
But Soul-House announced it will no longer be providing services.
RH Community Builders is now stepping in to help facilitate people out of the program.
Our news partner ABC 30 Action News reached out to the city of Fresno about the temporary closure. Mayor Jerry Derry responded with the following statement:
“We were shocked to learn late Monday that Soul Housing, a Los Angeles-based organization operating in Fresno, would be closing its doors on October 8. While we had previously been informed that the organization planned to cease operations in mid-October, we were assured there would be a coordinated transition of services – and that no one would be displaced.
Unfortunately, the sudden and unplanned nature of this early closure put more than 200 individuals at immediate risk of losing housing and vital care – a situation that is simply unacceptable.
Despite the incredibly short notice, our local service providers immediately stepped in to respond to this crisis. I want to specifically recognize RH Community Builders, Poverello House, and CalViva Health for their swift action, compassion, and leadership. Their efforts have been critical in helping to stabilize the situation and ensure those affected are not left on the streets.
While the abrupt departure of Soul Housing has created serious challenges, it has also underscored the strength, resilience, and commitment of our Fresno-based organizations. My administration will continue working closely with these partners to support those impacted and to establish long-term solutions that prevent future service disruptions.”
