FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — At least twice a week, Ray Alfaro, a second-year student at Fresno State, comes to the Amendola Family Student Cupboard.
“I’ve actually used it multiple times, especially throughout the week, just to get food,” he said. “In the middle of class, I’ll make a stop by just to grab a drink and stock up on my fridge at the dorm.”
Here, he can pick up anything, from fresh produce to canned goods.
Opened in 2014, the Student Cupboard is part of Fresno State’s Food Security project.
“You’re utilizing a free program the school provides,” Alfaro said. “I feel like there is no harm in coming out and getting free food.”
The cupboard serves thousands of students who are currently enrolled at the college and offers free access to fresh produce, snacks, drinks, canned goods and even hygiene supplies.
Terree Stevenson is the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students
“Last year, we served over 23,000 students in our cupboard,” Stevenson said. “We strive to provide nutritious foods, access to foods, have a balanced meal.”
Before shopping around the cupboard, students check in at the front desk.
For Ray, the student cupboard has been a big source of financial relief.
“I think it’s just being able not to think about the money,” he said. “I feel like being able to focus on my school has helped a lot.”
An August survey found that half of Americans said that the cost of groceries is a major source of stress.
To help fight food insecurity, this Thursday, ABC30 is partnering with the Big Fresno Fair to support Fresno State’s cupboard by sponsoring “Fill the Need Day.”
“We’re going to fill that need in a very special way,” says German Amezcua with the Big Fresno Fair.
Every ticket bought can make a difference.
“We definitely need to fill these cupboards,” Amezcua said.
