The Supreme Court is meeting Monday to discuss which appeals to consider for the upcoming term, including Ghislaine Maxwell’s, reports NBC News.
Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 on five federal counts related to her role in facilitating Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of minors, is asking the high court to reverse her sex-trafficking conviction and 20-year prison sentence.
Specifically, she is asking for the justices to rule on a legal question about the scope of the non-prosecution agreement Epstein made in 2007.
Maxwell has argued that she was unfairly charged in New York as Epstein’s 2007 NPA included language that “the United States also agrees that it will not institute any criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators of Epstein.”
The Justice Department has urged the Supreme Court not to take up Maxwell’s appeal, saying the issue is too “fact bound” to serve as a broadly useful precedent and that Maxwell’s reading of the agreement is overbroad.
If the high court agrees to grant certiorari, oral arguments would come later and a decision might follow in the 2025-26 term.
